ODS (OpenDocument Spreadsheet) files are a popular alternative to Excel, commonly used in LibreOffice, OpenOffice, and other open-source office suites. However, if you receive an ODS file and don't have the right software installed, opening it can be a challenge.
With OnlineDocumentViewer.com, you can open and view ODS files online instantly—no downloads, no installations, and no compatibility issues. Just upload your spreadsheet and access its content from any device, anywhere.

📜 A Brief History of the ODS Format
The OpenDocument Format (ODF) was developed by the Organization for the Advancement of Structured Information Standards (OASIS) in 2005. It was created as a universal, open-source alternative to proprietary file formats like Microsoft Excel’s XLS and XLSX.
ODS files are part of the OpenDocument standard and are widely used in free office suites like LibreOffice, Apache OpenOffice, and Calligra Suite. Many governments and organizations worldwide adopt ODS due to its open and interoperable nature, ensuring long-term access to data without software restrictions.
Why Use an Online ODS Viewer?
- No software required — the file opens in your browser, with no account and nothing installed.
- Any device — desktop, tablet or phone. The rendering happens on the server.
- 20 MB per file — the ceiling for the spreadsheet viewer. Over it, the upload is refused and the message names the limit.
- Nothing kept — transfers run over HTTPS and the file is deleted after viewing.
What the ODS Viewer Shows
- Every sheet in the file, not only the active tab.
- Layout as saved — column widths, merged cells, number and date formats.
- Embedded charts, rendered with the sheet.
- Formula results. Cells display their value rather than the formula text, because the workbook is drawn rather than executed. Macros in an XLSM never run.
- Zoom and scroll through a wide sheet.
Formats the Same Page Accepts
ODS is one of eight: XLS, XLSX, CSV, ODS, XLSM, XLSB, XLTX and XLTM. A protected workbook opens once you type the password into the field under the upload box.
Note what is not here: no editing, and no conversion out of ODS. XLS and XLSX convert to PDF, JPG or PNG on the converter page, up to 5 MB; ODS does not. To edit the file, open it in LibreOffice.
Who Benefits
- Students and researchers — open a dataset without installing an office suite.
- Business staff — read financial statements, invoices and plans on a machine with no LibreOffice.
- Government and NGOs — open-format spreadsheets, opened on any device, with nothing stored afterwards.
