A DWG arrives and the person who has to read it has no AutoCAD. That is most of the people a drawing gets sent to: the client, the contractor, the quantity surveyor, the planning officer.

📂 The Need for CAD File Accessibility
CAD files, particularly AutoCAD DWG files, are widely used for drafting and designing detailed plans. However, these files often require specific software to open and view, which can be a barrier for individuals who do not have access to expensive CAD programs. Additionally, in situations where quick collaboration is necessary, such as client meetings or team discussions, the ability to share and view CAD files easily becomes crucial.
This is where Online Document Viewer comes into play. It is an innovative solution that allows users to view CAD files directly in their web browsers without the need for software installations, sign-ups, or any associated costs.
✨ What the CAD viewer does
1. 🚫 No installation, no sign-up
Open the CAD viewer, upload the drawing, read it. No software, no account, no cost. The file is deleted from the server when the session ends.
2. 📐 DWG, DXF and DGN, up to 10 MB
DWG is the native AutoCAD format. DXF is the published text interchange version of the same drawing — larger, readable by far more software, and the file to ask for when a DWG fails. DGN is MicroStation, standard on civil and infrastructure projects.
The 10 MB ceiling is where real drawing sets fail first. PURGE unused blocks, layers and styles before uploading; it often halves the file. Do not convert to DXF to shrink it — DXF of the same drawing is bigger.
3. 🗂️ Layer control and measurement
Layers switch off one at a time, so the hatching or the services layer can come away from the walls underneath. Distance, angle and area can be measured on the open drawing. Line weights, hatches and dimension text stay accurate at every zoom level, because the render comes from the drawing data rather than from the preview thumbnail stored in the file.
4. 🗂️ The rest of the site
Seventeen viewers, 70+ extensions between them — PDF (25 MB), Word (15 MB), Excel (20 MB), PowerPoint (20 MB), PSD (25 MB), images (25 MB), email (10 MB) and more. Useful when a project folder arrives with one of each.
🚫 What it does not do
It renders; it does not edit. Nothing moves a line, changes a dimension or saves a revision. There is no annotation and no commenting. There is no account either, so no permissions and no audit trail. Nor is there a link to hand round: the upload belongs to one session and is deleted when it ends.
Xrefs and SHX fonts live on the sender's machine, not in the DWG. A drawing that arrives sparse is usually complete and missing its attachments; ask for a bound copy.
📝 Conclusion
Free, browser-based, DWG, DXF and DGN up to 10 MB, with layers and measurement. To hand a drawing to someone with no CAD software at all, the CAD converter exports DWG and DXF to PDF at up to 5 MB.
Open the CAD viewer and drop a drawing on it.
