Why OnlineDocumentViewer Is the Best Browser-Based Viewer for Excel Files

Open XLS, XLSX, CSV, ODS, XLSM, XLSB, XLTX and XLTM in a browser, up to 20 MB. No Excel, no account, deleted after viewing.

A spreadsheet arrives and the machine in front of you has no Excel. The Excel viewer opens it in a browser tab — no installation, no plug-in, no account.

Eight extensions: XLS, XLSX, CSV, ODS, XLSM, XLSB, XLTX and XLTM, up to 20 MB per upload.

Instant Excel Preview in the Browser – No Local Software Needed

OnlineDocumentViewer gives your team the ability to open spreadsheet files online without touching Excel or any other desktop tool.

The eight extensions

FormatWhat it is
XLS, XLSXStandard Excel workbooks — the binary pre-2007 one, and the current ZIP-of-XML one
XLSBThe modern workbook saved as binary. Faster and much smaller
XLSM, XLTMMacros attached. They render; they do not run
XLTXA template
CSVOne sheet of text: no formulas, no formatting, no tabs
ODSThe LibreOffice and OpenOffice equivalent

What renders, and what does not

The sheet opens at full layout: column widths, merged cells, number and date formats, and embedded charts — bar, line and pie.

  • Formula cells show their result, not the formula text.
  • Macros never run. An XLSM is drawn, not executed.
  • Every sheet opens, not only the active tab.
  • A protected workbook opens when you type the open password into the field under the upload box.

The limit

20 MB per upload. Over it, the file is refused with the number in the message. Usually the cause is a whole-column conditional format or an oversized used range — Ctrl+End shows where Excel thinks the data stops; delete the rows below it and save.

Tools while you read

  • Search – find values, labels or text.
  • Zoom – for dense tables and wide reports.
  • Print.
  • Sheet navigation – move between tabs.

Search reads text. A CSV or an XLSX carries real text, so it works; a picture pasted into a cell does not, because there is no OCR here.

Sending the numbers on

Two things are worth being exact about, because "cloud sharing" usually implies more than this site does:

  • There is no shareable link. Each upload belongs to one session and the file is deleted when it ends. Send the workbook itself and the recipient opens it here.
  • There is no embed. The site cannot be dropped into a dashboard or a portal; that is the Doconut SDK, which is licensed and runs on your own servers.

What you can do instead: Excel to PDF, Excel to JPG and Excel to PNG take XLS and XLSX up to 5 MB — usually the right move when the person receiving the numbers should read them, not edit them.

Key Benefits for Excel-Focused Teams

  • Zero installation – open a workbook with no Excel and no setup.
  • Eight extensions – XLS, XLSX, CSV, ODS, XLSM, XLSB, XLTX and XLTM, up to 20 MB.
  • Whole workbook – every sheet, not only the active tab.
  • Nothing kept – deleted after viewing, with no account behind it.
  • No editing – it renders. Change the numbers in the application that made them.

Common Questions

Q: Do I need a Microsoft account to open Excel files? A: No. There is no account of any kind here — not ours, not Microsoft's.

Q: Can I view multi-sheet workbooks? A: Yes. Every sheet in the file opens, not only the active tab.

Q: Are my files saved on your servers? A: No. The upload is deleted after viewing. There is no library and no second copy.

Q: Can I embed Excel previews in my company intranet? A: Not this site — it is not embeddable and has no API or embed code. The Doconut SDK is the licensed .NET library for that, running on your own servers.

Q: What is the size limit? A: 20 MB per upload for the viewer. The converters take XLS and XLSX up to 5 MB.
