Team Files: What a Free Viewer Solves, and What It Does Not

What a free browser viewer does for a team — 70+ formats, no licence, nothing stored — and the sharing, comments and versioning it does not have.

Teamwork stalls on a small, dull problem: somebody cannot open the file. A licence they do not have, a format their machine does not know, a phone instead of a workstation. Online Document Viewer fixes that one problem in a browser tab — and it is worth being precise about where it stops, because it is not a collaboration platform.

What it gives a team

1. Anyone can open the file

No licence, no install, no account. The person who received the DWG reads it without AutoCAD; the client who got the PSD reads it without Photoshop; the colleague on a phone reads the MPP without Project.

2. Formats, in one place

Online Document Viewer takes 70+ extensions:

  • PDF
  • Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint, with the OpenDocument and macro-enabled variants
  • CAD drawings (DWG, DXF, DGN)
  • Images (PSD, SVG, TIFF, JPG, PNG and the rest)
  • Email (EML, MSG, EMLX)
  • Visio, Project, EPUB, HTML, XML and text

Each viewer has its own ceiling: 25 MB for PDF, PSD, Visio, EPUB and images; 20 MB for Excel, PowerPoint and Project; 15 MB for Word and RTF; 10 MB for CAD and email; 5 MB for HTML, XML and text.

3. Nothing is kept

Transfers run over HTTPS and the upload is deleted after viewing. Nothing to clean up after a review, no copy of a client's contract sitting in a shared account, because there is no account.

Where it stops

Say it plainly, because the word "collaboration" gets used loosely:

  • No shared links. Each person uploads the file they already have; there is no URL to pass around.
  • No comments, no simultaneous editing, no annotation layer. Annotation is a plugin for the Doconut SDK, not a feature of this site.
  • No versions, no history, no permissions, no audit trail. With no accounts there is nothing to attach them to.
  • One file at a time. No folder upload, no ZIP, no queue.

If a review needs comments and versions, use a document management system for that and this for the moment somebody says "I can't open it".

Conclusion

A viewer that removes one obstacle completely and pretends to nothing else. Free, no account, nothing stored: Online Document Viewer. The same rendering inside your own product, annotation plugin included, is the Doconut SDK.
